JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Corporate Officer, the Communications Coordinator compiles, consolidates, writes and/or edits a variety of information materials including news releases, website content, annual reports, social media posts, and graphic design. The Communications Coordinator duties may include preparing and providing input into Communication and Marketing plans; attendance at open houses and public meetings as communications support; coordinating content for newsletters; design and application of graphics; coordination of online content; and identifying stories to share with citizens.

SKILLS                                                                                             

  • Ability to develop and prepare public engagement plans, define problem areas, coordinate the collection of input, analyze and evaluate data, and prepare comprehensive reports,
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as well as creativity, accuracy, and attention to detail,
  • Ability to translate technical information into easy-to-understand content,
  • Resourceful and explorative research skills as it pertains to funding applications,
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, and database software,
  • Exceptional time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines, multitask, and prioritize under pressure,
  • Recognizes impact of own behaviour and actions upon others,
  • Champions the change from within one’s own sphere of influence.

DUTIES

  • Prepare communication materials including newsletters, signage, background and research materials, social media content, and presentations for diverse audiences,
  • Develop and implement communication, marketing, and awareness campaigns,
  • Plan and coordinate engagement and outreach initiatives from concept to final results,
  • Review, interpret, analyze, and track engagement input and outcomes to support broad public input into decision-making,
  • Review and refine methods and procedures to ensure effective promotion of various meetings, displays, and events,
  • Organize meetings and events, including the coordination of support labour and equipment,
  • Design and create graphics for both online and offline content,
  • Promote and maintain the District’s online presence through the District website and Facebook page,
  • Liaise with other local governments, provincial and federal government agencies, communities, and associations,
  • Foster the District’s reputation as a progressive, collaborative, and transparent municipal government through proactive communications,
  • Ensure compliance with communications and public engagement policies and standards,
  • Establish and maintain effective working partnerships with internal and external contacts, including local media,
  • Support the Finance Department with grant and funding applications, as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education such as a diploma and/or degree in Public Relations, Communications, Public Administration, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience,
  • 5 years’ experience in a Communications role,
  • Considerable knowledge of the BC Community Charter and Local Government Act and the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other related policies, rules and regulations, bylaws and legislation,
  • IAP2 Certification considered an asset.
  • Experience working in a municipality preferred
